Former India captain Rohit Sharma was conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, during the Padma Awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to the veteran cricketer in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cricket.
Rohit received the honour following a decorated international career that included title-winning campaigns as India’s captain at the T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The 39-year-old Rohit Sharma attended the second Civil Investiture Ceremony with his wife Ritika Sajdeh after missing the first ceremony held in May.
Former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj was among the recipients of the Padma Bhushan, while Indian women’s hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia also received the Padma Shri.
One of India’s most successful batters, Rohit has represented the country across all three formats and remains active in One-Day Internationals after retiring from Test cricket and T20 Internationals.
Across 285 ODIs, Rohit has scored 11,720 runs at an average of 48.83, including 33 centuries and a highest score of 264 – the highest individual score in ODI history.
In T20 Internationals, he amassed 4,231 runs in 159 matches with five centuries, while his Test career yielded 4,301 runs in 67 matches, including 12 hundreds and a career-best score of 212.
Overall, Rohit has accumulated more than 20,000 international runs for India and is widely regarded as one of the finest opening batters of his generation.
