India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam’s bronze medal from the Archery World Cup Final 2025 in Nanjing, the People’s Republic of China, has been upgraded to silver after Mexico’s Mariana Bernal, who won the gold, was disqualified.
Last week, World Archery announced that Bernal was disqualified for violating anti-doping regulations and revised the final results of the season-ending tournament.
Bernal accepted the consequences of the anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for the prohibited anabolic steroid nandrolone in an out-of-competition test conducted by the International Testing Agency on September 29, 2025.
The violation carries a three-year period of ineligibility, with Bernal now suspended until after the LA 2028 Olympics.
With Bernal removed from the final standings, Mexico’s Andrea Becerra, who had beaten Jyothi Surekha Vennam 145-143 in the semi-finals before losing the final, has been elevated to gold.
Jyothi Surekha, who had originally secured bronze by defeating Great Britain’s Ella Gibson 150-145 with a perfect score in the medal match, has now been awarded the silver medal. Gibson has consequently been upgraded to bronze.
The Indian archer had already scripted history in Nanjing by becoming the first Indian woman compound archer to win an individual medal at the season-ending Archery World Cup Final.
The revised result makes Jyothi Surekha Vennam the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the individual compound event at the season-ending showpiece. She had earlier won mixed team silver alongside Abhishek Verma in the 2018 Finals.
Jyothi’s medal was India’s only podium finish at the 2025 Archery World Cup Final.
Compound archery is all set to make its Olympic debut at LA 2028, with the mixed team competition set to feature alongside recurve events.
