As the sunlight set on Centre Court at the conclusion of Wimbledon 2026, Jannik Sinner shone the brightest.
The world No. 1 successfully defended his men’s singles title on Sunday (12 July) against second seed Alexander Zverev. After the Roland-Garros champion edged out the first set tiebreak, Sinner responded to win 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court.
With a 10th consecutive victory against the German, Sinner becomes the 10th man in Open Era history to defend the gentlemen’s singles title at the All England Club, clinching his fifth career tennis major in the process.
“There’s no better place honestly to play tennis,” said Sinner in his winner’s speech on court. “Standing here, you can feel the nerves on a Sunday morning when you wake up. You know that this is a very, very special day, and you never know how many times you can come back on Sunday. So I never take things for granted.”
Zverev, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist, could not follow up his French Open triumph with victory in south-west London, where he enjoyed the best run of his career.
Sinner has sat atop the summit of the men’s game all season and now has a first Grand Slam of 2026 to show for it. In a final lasting three hours, 46 minutes, the Italian has emerged as the king of the grass once again.
From February to May 2025, Sinner served a doping ban in a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency.
