The World Bank Group is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction caused by the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi flood of August 26. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and with the communities whose homes and livelihoods were affected.
We commend the swift response of the Government of Nepal and emergency teams, who rescued hundreds of people under extremely difficult conditions. The scale of this disaster will now require a resolute and coordinated recovery effort, and the World Bank Group stands ready to help.
We have made available up to $170 million in emergency financing to support the Government’s immediate response and begin restoring critical infrastructure and services. We are prepared to provide further resources if there are additional needs.
Beyond immediate relief, we are committed to working with the Government on restoring trade, supporting reconstruction, and developing investment programs for more resilient infrastructure. We are also exploring options to strengthen emergency preparedness, including through international collaboration.
As the flood has directly impacted the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project, we are working with the project company and contractors to assist in their support to affected workers and their families, while damage to the project continues to be assessed.
The World Bank Group has also conducted a rapid post-disaster damage assessment in coordination with the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations, to help the Government prioritize recovery investments and identify additional financing needs.
We remain fully committed to supporting Nepal through this crisis and in building a more resilient future.
