World Skate Games 2026: Sky Brown sees the silver lining in Asunción: “I try to do things that even the boys aren’t doing”

The heavyweight battle of women’s park skateboarding had another chapter at the World Skate Games 2026 in Asunción, Paraguay, with Japan’s Hasegawa Mizuho stood atop the podium as Team GB’s Sky Brown scooped up silver on Saturday (10 October).

While Mizuho took her second victory of the week, after also taking gold in the vert discipline in Asunción, Brown marked her return to skating after a brief break with another convincing performance in her LA28 qualifying campaign.

The 18-year-old’s quest for her third Olympic Games has been dialled up as she continues her dual dream of appearing in both the surfing and skateboarding events in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The summer has seen her swap between surfboard and skateboard, including competing at the US Open of surfing.

Her last skating competition was back in June, when she took silver at the X Games in Sacramento.

Team GB’s two-time Olympic medallist is currently ranked world No. 2 in women’s park behind Mizuho, whose high-flying form also pipped her to gold in the WST World Cup in Rome this summer.

Sky Brown: “Every time I skate, I try to be different”

Brown’s philosophy of skating is one of style. In Asunción, it was another showcase.

A solid 77.89 score in the first run saw her masterfully adjust her speed in the second to pack in the tricks.

After a signature flawless frontside 360 to start, she added in a backside tailslide and squeezed in a Rodeo at the buzzer for an increased, and her best, score of 89.50.

Each of her runs landed her centrepiece kickflip Indy trick over the loveseat section of the course, a feat no one else had dared that week. The direction of the run makes for a blindsided landing into the deep end; it was held wonderfully by Brown each time.

“I said to my dad, ‘I’m not doing a safety run, I just want to send it’,” she told World Skate after the competition.

“Every time I skate, I try to be different, try to do things that maybe even the boys aren’t doing, so I had a blast.”

“I only had a few attempts (at the kickflip Indy) in practice, but that was one of my goals. I really try to push myself; I want to skate how I would free-skating.”

A fall in the third run took it to a golden run shoot-out with Mizuho, as was the case in Rome. Unable to fit in the Rodeo in the 45 seconds, it was a strong settle for silver after four months out of the skating circuit for Brown.

“The last time I really skated was in Sacramento (in June), and that was the last time I did the Rodeo, so I wasn’t sure if I wasn’t sure if I was going to bring it to this event,” she continued.

“But these girls are really pushing it; they’re sending it to another level. Every time out there with Mizuho (Hasegawa) is a battle, so I knew I really had to push myself. It was a bummer I didn’t get it in time for the final run, but next time.”
