The men’s 100m will take centre stage on the second day of the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham,
Among the athletes competing for gold is Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs.
The Italian has enjoyed something of a resurgence this season, clocking a wind-assisted 9.67 seconds in Eisenstadt. He has also twice dipped below 10 seconds in Diamond League athletics action in Rome and Paris.
With a slew of major medals already to his name, Jacobs is chasing a third European 100m title after claiming top spot on the podium at Birmingham 2022 and Rome 2024.
A third consecutive European 100m crown would put Jacobs in rare company, joining Valerii Borzov and Linford Christie as the only men to have achieved the feat.
But a strong British contingent will be determined to spoil the Italian’s bid for history on home soil.
Romell Glave finished just 0.09 seconds behind Jacobs in Eisenstadt and has broken 10 seconds five times this season, although four of those performances were with an illegal tailwind.
He also impressed on home soil by winning the UK Athletics Championships title on the same Alexander Stadium track that will host Tuesday’s final.
Elsewhere, Munich 2022 bronze medallist Jeremiah Azu is back just over a week after finishing fifth in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while Owen Ansah set a German record of 9.98 earlier this year.
