Ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Carlos Yulo travelled to a gym in England to spend time training alongside Team GB’s Jake Jarman. The Filipino artistic gymnastics star had come with questions.
“I went to his gym and actually I asked him how to do vaults,” Yulo told reporters Thursday (15 October) at podium training ahead of the 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam. “He’s really a good vaulter. That three-and-a-half twist is insane. No one could ever do it other than him.”
“As a gymnast, I really, really ask. I am really curious,” he continued. “How they do stuff like that, especially him, in that frame and in that kind of body that he has and how he does floor is really amazing.”
Jarman was eager to share his perspective – and help his peer any way he could.
“I just remember he was having some issues on vault with his vault block, and I was seeing if I could pitch in and help him out because it looked like he was struggling,” Jarman said to Olympics.com. “To see him then improve it enough to perform it as well as he did out in Paris, it was really cool.”
Those improvements led to history in Paris, as Yulo grabbed the vaulting Olympic title.
The two keep meeting on the podium: Yulo won floor gold at the Games with Jarman third, and the result flipped at the 2025 World Championships, where Jarman took the floor title and Yulo claimed bronze. On vault, Jarman holds the 2023 world crown and Yulo the Olympic one.
