The Indian women’s badminton team stayed in contention at the Uber Cup 2026 with a 4-1 victory over Ukraine in its second Group A clash in Horsens, Denmark, on Sunday night.
Unnati Hooda, 23rd in the singles badminton rankings, began the proceedings for India with a 21-19, 22-20 win over Ukraine’s top-ranked singles player at world No. 41 Polina Buhrova.
World No. 35 Tanvi Sharma, who won silver at the BWF Junior World Championships last year, doubled India’s lead in the Uber Cup tie by beating Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-12, 17-21, 21-10.
India opted to rest two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu in singles and instead fielded the Thailand Masters 2026 champion Devika Sihag, who beat Mariia Stoliarenko 23-21, 21-13.
Indian badminton players, however, suffered a loss in the first women’s doubles, where Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi lost 21-11, 21-17 against Buhrova and Kantemyr.
Sindhu and Paris 2024 Olympian Tanisha Crasto then completed the 4-1 victory with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Stoliarenko and Sofiia Lavrova.
Earlier, the Indian women’s badminton team lost its Uber Cup Group A opener against Denmark 3-2 and will face defending champions, the People’s Republic of China, in its last group match on Monday. It will be a must-win clash for Sindhu and Co.
The two top teams from the group of four advance to the quarter-finals.
India have won two bronze medals at the Uber Cup in the past, having made the semi-finals in 2014 and 2016.
In the Thomas Cup, former champions India began their campaign with a 4-1 win over Canada in Group A on Friday and will be up against Australia on Monday.
