Indian shooters topped the standings at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, with a rich haul of 16 medals – five gold, six silver and five bronze – with two of these coming on the final day of competition on Sunday.
Hemant Burman won the silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event with an impressive score of 351.7. He was only outdone by Kazakh shooter Oleg Noskov, who bagged the gold with a new junior world record of 355.6. Nikita Sokolov of Uzbekistan finished on 341.2 to win the bronze medal.
Two other Indians, Rohit Kanyan and Vedant Nitin Waghmare, also qualified for the eight-man medal round but had to settle for the sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
In the qualifying round, Vedant was the best-placed Indian at fourth, with Rohit and Hemant following in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Zuhair Khan and Addya Katyal, competing in the mixed trap team event, qualified for the four-team final by finishing third in the qualifiers with a cumulative score of 137.
The Indian duo shot 19 in the final to claim the bronze medal and mark the country’s first podium finish in a shotgun event at the Cairo meet.Â
A team from Hungary took the gold with 32 – a new junior world record – while another team comprising neutral athletes took the silver with 25.
The second Indian team of Manitwa Singh Rawat and Sabeera Haris, a senior ISSF World Cup medallist, missed the cut for the final as they placed ninth with 131 in the qualifying round.
India struck out in the women’s 50m rifle prone with Tejal Athawat emerging as the country’s best finisher in the event at sixth with a score of 610.2.
Anushka Thokur (607.4) was eighth, Khwaish Sharma (602.1) came in 12th while Yugeshwari Bais (598.4) was 13th among 15 shooters. The bronze medallist in the event tallied 615.1.
A total of 284 shooters from 25 federations were in action at the Cairo shooting meet, with India fielding 71 – the largest contingent.
Neutral athletes won 11 medals – three gold, four silver and four bronze – at the meet, making them the second-most successful team in Cairo behind India. France were third with three golds, one silver and two bronze for a total tally of six.
At last year’s ISSF Junior World Cup legs held across Germany’s Suhl and New Delhi, Indian shooters won 37 medals, including 17 golds – the most by any federation.
