As the Indian women’s hockey team steps into a packed 2026 calendar featuring the FIH Women’s World Cup, Asian Games and Nations Cup, the focus is not just on results – but on building a system that sustains success.
At the centre of this approach are senior team head coach Sjoerd Marijne and his junior team counterpart Tim White, who are working closely to align the two teams.
The two coaches believe synergy between the senior and junior teams could be the key to sustained success in the years to come.
Both hockey coaches recently spoke to Olympics.com about collaboration, transition pathways, and preparing for a demanding season ahead.

Q: How important is alignment between the junior and senior teams?
Tim White: Any team that wants to be world-class and have sustainable success needs strong collaboration between the senior program and the pathway beneath it. You can’t treat them as separate systems. I’ve seen this work in Belgium. The juniors transitioned seamlessly into the senior team and became vital players. That’s exactly the kind of structure we’re trying to build here in India.
Q: How does this collaboration work on a day-to-day basis?
Sjoerd Marijne: I always keep an eye on what Tim’s doing with the juniors, and vice versa. We are constantly sharing ideas. I tell him what we are working on with the senior team – what makes the difference at that level – and he implements those aspects with the juniors. That way, everything stays aligned.
Q: Can you give an example of this shared approach?
Sjoerd Marijne: Before a recent tour, I spoke to each unit – defenders, midfielders, and strikers – about what I expect from them. These are the same notes I share with Tim. So when a junior player comes into the senior team, they already understand the expectations. There’s no adjustment period needed.
Q: Do you actively observe each other’s training sessions?
Tim White: Yes, absolutely. I was on the pitch with the seniors today, just observing how they train and helping where I can. At the same time, I’m learning from Sjoerd – understanding what kind of attributes he’s looking for in players at the highest level.
Q: Does training together in the same environment help this process?
Tim White: It makes a big difference. Being in the same camp allows for constant interaction, not just formal discussions. You can step into sessions, have quick conversations, and stay updated in real time. That’s invaluable.
Q: How do you track players who are already moving between the two squads?
Sjoerd Marijne: Don’t forget, we already have juniors like Sakshi and Ishika in the senior setup. They are still eligible for juniors, but they’re training with us. I keep Tim updated on how they’re doing so that there’s a clear picture of their development.
Q: What challenges have you faced while settling into this system?
Tim White: Like any international setup, there are always adjustments—different environments, communication styles. But the support from the staff has been excellent. Even things like language, which people often talk about, haven’t really been an issue because everyone is working together.”
Q: What is the ultimate goal of this dual-coach approach?
Sjoerd Marijne: The goal is simple – create a system where players can move up without disruption. We don’t want players to feel like they are entering a completely new setup when they reach the senior level. They should already know what is required.
Tim White: If we get this right, it’s not just about one tournament. It’s about building something that lasts.
Q: With a busy 2026 season ahead, how do you see this partnership shaping results?
Sjoerd Marijne: It’s going to be a demanding year, no doubt. But if the structure is strong, results will follow.
Tim White: We’re building towards consistency. That’s what will ultimately take this team back to the top level.
