Nelly Korda won her third career major to return to No. 1 in the women’s golf world rankings at the Chevron Championship on Sunday (26 April).
The Olympic champion led through all four rounds in the year’s first major in Houston, Texas, to finish on top by five strokes over Yin Ruoning of the People’s Republic of China and Patty Tavatanakit of Thailand – the biggest margin of victory at the Chevron in 18 years.
Korda shot a final-round, 2-under 70 for an 18-under 270 total in winning her second tournament of the season. She missed Dottie Pepper‘s 72-hole scoring record by one shot, and is the first in 35 years to go wire-to-wire in a major while leading by multiple shots after each round.
The 27-year-old U.S. athlete returned to the summit of the rankings for the first time since August, unseating Jeeno Thitikul who did not make the weekend cut at the tournament.
Korda cashed in a winner’s check of US$1.35 million as she captured her 17th title on the LPGA Tour.
“Just amazing,” Korda said. “It hasn’t really settled in yet but what a week. I feel very relieved after feeling mid-round the nerves of holding that lead on the golf course.
“I’m just so happy.”
