Andre De Grasse claimed a statement win at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on Sunday (26 April), cruising to victory in the men’s 200m in 19.84s at a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.
Earlier, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics 200m champion had clocked 9.95s to finish second in the 100m at the same meet.
The seven-time Olympic medallist led a Canadian 1–2, with Aaron Brown following in 20.07, while the USA’s Kyree King completed the podium in 20.24.
In the women’s event, USA’s Kayla White showed dominant form to secure the win in 22.68s, ahead of compatriot Kenondra Davis (23.22) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Leah Bertrand (23.39).
Olympic 200m champion, Gabby Thomas, who was originally listed to compete in the event, pulled out citing fatigue, having clocked 10.95s to win the 100m event earlier in the evening.
On Friday (24 April), the U.S. star produced a world-leading 21.89s in the 200m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, the first sub-22-second performance ever recorded in the women’s event on Kenyan soil.
