The campaign’s core message emphasized that free and fact-based information strengthened democratic accountability, expanded public dialogue and supported human rights.

The campaign aligned closely with findings from UNESCO’s World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Report, which identified journalism as a critical pillar for preventing conflict and fostering democratic stability. The report highlighted how strong, independent media ecosystems contributed to early warning of social tensions, countered disinformation and promoted inclusive narratives that reduced the risk of violence.

As part of the campaign’s global outreach, leading international newspapers and media organizations participated through print and digital placements, reflecting broad support from major newsrooms across regions. Participating outlets included:

  • The New York Times (United States)
  • Financial Times (United Kingdom
  • The Guardian (United Kingdom)
  • The Wall Street Journal (United States)
  • Le Monde (France)
  • Libération (France)
  • La Tribune (France)
  • El País (Spain)
  • Helsingin Sanomat (Finland)
  • The Globe and Mail (Canada)
  • DW (Germany)

Through international events, partnerships, and public advocacy carried out around World Press Freedom Day 2026, UNESCO aimed to mobilize policymakers, journalists, civil society and citizens to recognize that protecting journalism remained an essential investment in peaceful and democratic futures.
