The workshop is supported by MiCT and the Luxembourg Funds-in-Trust for the Safety of Journalists and brings together journalists from across Sudan for a series of sessions focused on enhancing professional standards, addressing hate speech, promoting information integrity and digital security, and reinforcing the safety of journalists.
During the opening, Mr Junaid Sorosh-Wali, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Sudan, emphasised the importance of supporting Sudanese media professionals during this critical period and the role that media plays in countering hate speech, noting that:
“Journalists play a vital role in ensuring access to reliable information, fostering dialogue, and contributing to peace and social cohesion, while also playing a critical role in countering hate speech by promoting accurate, ethical, and responsible reporting.”
The workshop also benefits technical support from UNESCO Headquarters, particularly in delivering a session on UNESCO’s global work in advancing freedom of expression, media development, and the safety of journalists.

This initiative reflects the strong partnership between UNESCO and MiCT, combining international expertise and local engagement to support independent and resilient media in Sudan.

The workshop comes ahead of World Press Freedom Day 2026, observed annually on May 3. This year’s theme, “Freedom of Expression in the Face of the AI Revolution”, highlights the opportunities and challenges emerging technologies present to journalism and public-interest information.
This activity is part of UNESCO’s Emergency Action Plan for Sudan (2025-27) and is generously supported by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Through this workshop, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment and dedication to empowering Sudanese journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the evolving media landscape while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
