Shivam Lohakare won the men’s javelin throw title at the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026 on Monday but the entire field fell short of the qualifying standard for the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Competing at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi, Lohakare sealed the title with a personal best throw of 81.71m, which was 0.90m short of the CWG qualifying standard of 82.61m.
He opened with 74.31m before an 80.97m effort on his second throw. The Indian javelin thrower then registered 79.21m, 80.38m and 80.01m in his next three attempts before producing his winning throw in the final round.
Lohakare was the only athlete in the field to record four throws beyond the 80m mark. Yashvir Singh finished second with an 80.80m throw, while Rohit Yadav was third with 80.40m.
Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav, who finished a credible fourth at the World Championships last year with 86.27m, failed to cross the 80m mark. He finished fifth in Ranchi with a 79.07m effort.
Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra holds the national record in the javelin throw with 90.23m
In the men’s shot put, Samardeep Singh Gill won the title with a 20.46m throw and breached the qualification standard of 20.36m for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in the event.
Two-time Asian Games gold medallist and national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who lost to Samardeep Singh Gill at the National Open last year, was second again with 20.07m while Karanveer Singh finished third with a 19.38m effort.
In the men’s 200m race, Animesh Kujur missed the CWG qualifying standard by a mere 0.03 seconds. He won the sprint with a time of 20.64s ahead of Jishnu Prasad PK (20.98m) and Abhay Singh (21.01m).
Earlier in the competition, Animesh Kujur had breached the CWG qualifying standard of 10.16s in the 100m after clocking a personal best of 10.15s.
Meanwhile, national record holder Praveen Chithravel took the men’s triple jump title with a best leap of 17.08m that saw him breach the qualifying standard of 16.89.
Commonwealth Games silver medallist Abdulla Aboobacker (16.63m) finished second, while Gailey Venister (16.37m) was third.
Elsewhere, Yashas P clinched the men’s 400m hurdles title after 49.00s, edging out Santhosh Kumar T by just 0.06 seconds. Subhas Das completed the podium with a time of 50.51s.
Both Yashas P and Santhosh Kumar T breached the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 50.27s. The duo had also breached the mark during the heats.
This year’s Federation Cup served as the lone athletics selection trial for the Commonwealth Games 2026, scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
Monday marked the fourth and final day of the meet.
