As part of the joint activities carried out under the Horizontes Amazonía programme and the Csielo project, UNESCO Peru, the Office for Climate Education (OCE) — a UNESCO Category 2 Centre — and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) organized the workshop “Climate Change: Educating for a Better Future.”
The activity, held in Iquitos (Loreto) from May 25 to 27, aimed to provide participants with scientific and pedagogical foundations on climate change to address the issue both in classrooms and training processes. To this end, OCE specialists shared interactive sessions on topics such as the greenhouse effect, carbon footprint, soil degradation and biodiversity, oceans and the cryosphere, impacts on the Amazon, and climate justice.
The meeting brought together territorial and educational partners of the Horizontes Amazonía programme, including Amazon Forever, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), the Teacher Training Program for the Peruvian Amazon (Formabiap), and the Nopoki campus of the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae (UCSS).
Representatives from government institutions, academia, the Church, Indigenous organizations, and NGOs in Loreto also participated, including the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP), the National University of the Peruvian Amazon (UNAP), the Regional Directorate of Education of Loreto (DREL), UGEL Loreto-Nauta, UGEL Maynas, the Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos, the Loreto Public Pedagogical Higher Education School (EESPP), the Water Defense Committee, Despensa Amazónica, Amanatari, Kallpa, the Regional Organization of Indigenous Peoples of the East (ORPIO), and the Organization of Indigenous Students of the Peruvian Amazon (OEPIAP).
The training process included visits to the headquarters of Formabiap and Amazon Forever to gather Amazonian local and Indigenous knowledge on good living, the challenges posed by climate change, and the role of education in mitigation and adaptation efforts.
This space helped strengthen dialogue among different knowledge systems and fostered the exchange of experiences among key territorial stakeholders, reaffirming the importance of coordinated efforts to promote contextualized, intercultural climate education committed to the conservation of the Amazon. UNESCO promotes education on climate change issues as a key component of its work on education for sustainable development.
