Gurindervir Singh shattered the men’s 60m national record at the National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Competing at the Kalinga Stadium, the 25-year-old sprinter clocked 6.60 seconds in the final to win the gold medal. He also bettered the previous national record of 6.67s, set by Elakkiyadasan Kanadasan in Tehran in 2018.

The mark, however, is subject to ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Lalu Prasad Bhoi also dipped below the previous national record, finishing second in 6.65s while Nuzrat claimed bronze in 6.71s.

Gurindervir Singh had set the men’s 100m national record of 10.20s at the Indian Grand Prix athletics meet in Bengaluru in March last year, a mark that was surpassed four months later by Animesh Kujur in Greece.

The 60m race was marred by three false starts, with the third resulting in the disqualification of national 100m and 200m record holder Animesh Kujur.

Another indoor record which fell on Thursday was in the women’s 400m. Saloni Kumari clocked 53.73s to better the previous mark of 53.89s set by Pinki Pramanik way back in 2005.

Sukhi Baskey and Unnathi Bollanda finished a distant second and third, respectively.

The second day of the Bhubaneswar meet saw Indian athletes compete in the senior men’s and women’s competitions in triple jump, high jump, 400m and 1500m.

Swadhin Kumar Majhi clinched the men’s high jump title with a clearance of 2.18m, edging out Asian Championships silver medallist Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who managed 2.15m.

Dhairyshil Dhanaji Gayakwad picked up the bronze on countback.

In the men’s pole vault, Reegan G impressed on his indoor debut, clearing 5.30m to register the best mark by an Indian in the event in any indoor competition. He later attempted 5.41m in a bid to set the national record but was unsuccessful.
