A global call
For the first time since the report was launched more than three decades ago, UNESCO invited researchers and experts worldwide to express their interest in joining the author teams through an open global call. The initiative generated exceptional interest, with over 3,000 applications received from every UNESCO regional group.
Following a rigorous evaluation process, 157 experts representing more than 70 countries have been selected as authors. The group of experts reflects a broad range of scientific disciplines, as well as policy expertise with national and regional perspectives, ensuring that the report captures the diversity of today’s global STI landscape. Particular attention was paid to ensuring multidisciplinary representation, geographical balance, and gender diversity, with women accounting for 42% of authors and men 58%, alongside a mix of established and emerging experts.
Focus of eighth edition
The forthcoming eighth edition, expected to be published early 2027, will examine recent transformations in national and global STI systems while exploring the opportunities and challenges likely to shape science and innovation in the years ahead. It will provide analysis of evolving research ecosystems, technological change, international scientific cooperation and the role of science in addressing global priorities.
The selected authors have begun preparing the thematic, regional and global chapters of the report under the coordination of the UNESCO editorial team and the overall guidance of the 11 members of an external independent editorial board. Over the coming months, the appointed experts will work under the guidance of these two bodies to prepare the report’s thematic, regional and global chapters. The drafting process will include multiple rounds of internal and external peer review to ensure the publication meets the highest standards of scientific quality, analytical rigour and policy relevance.

Published every five years since 1993, the UNESCO Science Report is the Organization’s main assessment of global developments in science, technology and innovation. It analyzes how countries build scientific capacity, invest in research and innovation, respond to emerging technologies, and use science to address sustainable development challenges. It is widely used by governments, policymakers, researchers and international organizations as an evidence base for STI policy.
