Assessment can become a key tool for improving learning when its results are translated into concrete action in schools. With this aim, on 28 July 2026, the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE) of the UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago held the webinar “From Results to Pedagogical Action for Improvement”, which brought together more than 500 school principals, supervisors, assessment coordinators and teachers from the province of La Rioja, Argentina.

The event, organized jointly with the Directorate of Primary Education and the Directorate for the Assessment of Educational Quality of the Ministry of Education of La Rioja, was held within the framework of ERCE Schools, an initiative aimed at strengthening the capacities of education communities to use assessment to improve learning.

In La Rioja, ERCE Schools began to be implemented in late 2025, with the participation of 140 educational institutions. Since then, their leadership teams and teachers have made progress in administering diagnostic instruments designed to assess the current state of learning and generate useful information for pedagogical decision-making. This initial stage made it possible to establish a baseline to support education communities in identifying progress, challenges and opportunities for improvement.

During the online event, the results of the project’s initial assessment were presented, and school leadership teams and teachers were encouraged to use this evidence to review and enhance their early literacy improvement plans.

Strategies for translating the results of the diagnostic assessment into concrete pedagogical action were also discussed. In this way, the event sought to promote a culture of continuous improvement based on evidence and to help strengthen the teaching and learning of reading.

In this regard, Carlos Henríquez, Coordinator of the Laboratory, emphasized: “ERCE Schools seeks to make assessment a tool for improving learning. It is not only about knowing the results, but about placing evidence at the service of the pedagogical decisions made by education communities. The commitment shown by education professionals in La Rioja reflects their interest in turning information into action that strengthens early literacy and contributes to the continuous improvement of teaching.”

ERCE Schools is a regional initiative of the LLECE Laboratory that is currently being implemented in Argentina, Panama and the Dominican Republic. The project strengthens the capacities of education communities to interpret and use data in order to improve student learning.
