As part of the project “Strengthening Sudan’s Response to Hate Speech, Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion”, the UNESCO Sudan Office organised a workshop in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and National Education, the National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, the Ministry of Education and Guidance of Kassala State, and relevant stakeholders.
Building on similar efforts in Red Sea State, the workshop created a space for participants to exchange experiences, strengthen coordination and explore practical ways to address hate speech through education, media and community engagement.
“Countering hate speech is a shared responsibility. Government institutions, communities, educators and the media all have a role to play in creating an environment where dialogue, understanding and peaceful coexistence can prevail,” said Mr Junaid Sorosh-Wali, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Sudan.
Reaching people in ways that reflect Kassala’s diversity is an important part of this effort. UNESCO plans to support the development and broadcasting of awareness messages through radio and television, using different languages and dialects to make these messages accessible to communities across the state.
