Education cannot undo the violence of the past, but it can shape how future generations understand it. This was the key theme of the IPHGE Policy Training on Education about Violent Pasts, held in Phnom Penh from 28 September to 1 October 2026.

The four-day training took place in the context of the Cambodian Memorial Sites, comprising the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, and the former M-13 prison, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025. The memorial sites embody the history of the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979 and provided a meaningful setting for discussions on how education can help learners engage with difficult histories.
