The new Chapters have been created following a global call for proposals launched in May 2026. The initiative forms part of UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the Alliance, strengthen collaboration among its members and expand its reach across regions and communities.
Conceived as a network of networks, the MIL Alliance brings together organizations and individuals committed to advancing media and information literacy. It currently counts over 700 members from 110 countries. The new Chapters will provide platforms for members to exchange knowledge, develop joint initiatives, mobilize expertise and strengthen cooperation at regional and international levels. They reflect the diversity of the global MIL community, bringing together researchers, educators, civil society organizations, media professionals, young people and other stakeholders.
Media and information literacy is a shared commitment that requires cooperation across borders, sectors and communities. With the creation of these Chapters, the UNESCO MIL Alliance is taking an important step forward, bringing people and organizations together to turn ideas into concrete action.

Strengthening a global network of networks
The creation of these Chapters marks a new phase in the development of the MIL Alliance, providing members with additional opportunities to collaborate, share expertise and translate global commitments into concrete action.
By connecting existing networks and encouraging cooperation across regions and thematic areas, the Chapters will help strengthen the collective impact of media and information literacy initiatives worldwide.
The Francophone Africa Chapter will help bring media and information literacy closer to the realities of our communities. It will amplify African voices, encourage the exchange of experiences and foster solutions adapted to local challenges, from disinformation to the growing influence of AI.
