Nigeria’s inspirational head coach has his eyes focused on delivering Nigeria’s first AFCON title since 2013
Pictures of a distraught Eric Chelle crouching in his technical area were shared widely after his Mali side crumbled to a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Côte d’Ivoire in the quarter-finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Mali had led for a large part of the game before Côte d’Ivoire completed a remarkable comeback with a last-ditch winner in extra time.
Nonetheless, Mali kept faith with Chelle until June 2024, when he was dismissed after a series of disappointing setbacks in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including a goalless draw against 10-man Madagascar.
