Felicia Schröder is widely touted as one of the best young players in women’s football. It is a status reflected in her price tag, with Real Madrid reportedly forking out a record-breaking sum to land the signature of the teenage sensation.
Despite still being at the very start of what promises to be an exciting career, the 19-year-old has already had match-defining moments. In doing so, she has become an explosive striker and a European champion.
It can be easy to get swept up in the idea of potential, given her age and the interest from certain clubs that came knocking over the summer, but it is evident that along with bags of talent, Schröder is tuned into her sense of self.
Moving away from Sweden, her homeland and the place she signed her first professional contract, was not going to come easily. When the call from Las Blancas came, though, it quickly became a no-brainer.
“I feel like, especially for me when I’m young, it’s about taking the right decision and making the right move,” she told GOAL earlier this year, when asked about her future.
“I’m just taking my time and hopefully taking the right decisions and not stressing about anything.”
Chelsea were one of a handful of clubs to officially bid for Schröder, while several sides from North America are said to have registered their interest too. Real Madrid were the option that ultimately made the most sense, feeling like the right fit from the very first conversation.
It was a club that offered the right environment for the teen prodigy, matching her own ambitions. Their shared goals will be tested in the coming weeks, with her first big outing in white coming in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
Madrid take on Ajax across two legs, beginning on Wednesday (26 August), with a place in the league phase at stake. There is perhaps no better stage for Schröder to introduce herself to Madridistas than this.
