Launched in 2022, the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022-2032) provides a global framework to draw attention to the critical situation of many Indigenous languages worldwide and to mobilize stakeholders to support their revitalization, preservation and promotion.
Guided by the Global Action Plan for the Decade, the initiative seeks to foster coordinated action across a wide range of areas, including education, digital empowerment, access to justice, cultural expression, and the transmission of Indigenous knowledge and languages across generations.
The Global Action Plan calls for a mid-term review to:
- assess achievements;
- evaluate ongoing efforts;
- identify gaps;
- inform future priorities.
In preparation for this milestone, the Global Task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages, the Decade’s global governance mechanism bringing together Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, Member States and United Nations entities, notably UNESCO, UNDESA, and OHCHR, has developed a Concept Note through a consultative process. The Concept Note outlines the proposed approach, objectives and modalities for the mid-term process, with the aim of strengthening coordination and guiding collective action towards the objectives of the Decade.

As part of the preparations for the mid-term, the IDIL Secretariat is undertaking a mapping exercise to better understand planned activities, events and initiatives that will contribute to this milestone. This exercise will help highlight the diversity of actions taking place around the world, identify their links with the Global Action Plan and the mid-term Concept Note, and support greater coordination and visibility of collective efforts.
Stakeholders are invited to share information on their planned activities and initiatives by completing the dedicated form below. The information collected will contribute to building a comprehensive overview of mid-term-related actions and support preparations for this important moment in the implementation of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.
