The Badminton Association of India (BAI) will introduce the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) new 3×15 scoring system across all domestic competitions from July 2026, six months before its proposed international rollout.
The revised format will debut at the All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament in Ernakulam, scheduled from July 7 to 14, before being implemented across the domestic calendar.
Under the new system, badminton matches will continue to be played as the best of three games under rally-point scoring. However, each game will now be played to 15 points instead of 21. A two-point lead will still be required from 14-all, with games capped at 21 points, where the next point after 20-all will decide the winner.
BAI said the early adoption would help Indian badminton players, coaches and technical officials adapt to the tactical and physical demands of the shorter format before the BWF plans to implement it globally from January 2027.
“In order to ensure uniformity in competition, facilitate better preparation, and enable players, coaches, technical officials and all stakeholders to become fully accustomed to the new scoring format well before its proposed implementation by the Badminton World Federation from January 2027 onwards, it has been decided to further extend the implementation of the 3×15 scoring system,” BAI general secretary Sanjay Mishra said.
“This decision has been taken to ensure that players across all age groups develop familiarity and competitive adaptability to the revised scoring format, thereby ensuring a smooth transition when the system is adopted internationally.”
The traditional mid-game interval will now be taken when the leading player or pair reaches eight points, instead of 11. The third game will continue to feature a change of ends, accompanied by a 60-second interval, while the 120-second break between games remains unchanged.
The new format will be used across zonal championships, domestic ranking tournaments and national championships in all age groups, from Under-11 to senior and masters competitions.
