Tejas Shirse came within 0.02 seconds of his own national record in the men’s 110m hurdles, while Murali Sreeshankar cleared 8.04m to win the long jump title at the sixth leg of the Indian Athletics Series 2026 in Chennai on Sunday.
Competing in his first outdoor meet of the season, Shirse clocked 13.43s to post the second-fastest time by an Indian in the event. The Indian athlete competed in a couple of indoor meets in the USA in January but had been nursing an ankle injury since.
The 23-year-old Shirse holds the 100m hurdles national record of 13.41s, set two years ago. M Krishik finished a close second in 13.44s, while Rathish Pan was third with 14.10s.
Both Shirse and Krishik bettered the Asian Games qualifying standard of 13.63s for the event set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
However, breaching the qualifying mark does not guarantee a place in India’s Asian Games contingent, with the final decision resting with the AFI.
In the men’s long jump, Murali Sreeshankar, competing in his third competition of the 2026 athletics season, won the event with a best effort of 8.04m to continue his solid form.
He won the opening leg of the Indian Athletics Series in Bengaluru last month with a best jump of 8.15m and has already cleared the entry set for the Asian Games. Sreeshankar also leapt 8.12m to win a meet in South Africa two weeks ago.
The Chennai meet was the sixth of the 16 Indian Athletics Series introduced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) in the 2026 season. The one-day event for the Indian athletes featured a full slate of track and field finals.
National record holder Praveen Chithravel also impressed, winning the men’s triple jump event with a season-best leap of 16.95m.
Tokyo 2020 Olympian MP Jabir clocked 49.93s to finish third in the men’s 400m hurdles, which was won by Santhosh Kumar T in 49.47s.
The men’s javelin throw saw Arshdeep Singh (77.04m) claim the top spot ahead of Parmod (76.16m) and Sahil Silwal (74.34m). Karishma Sanil won the women’s event with a 53.03m throw.
The Indian Athletics Series will resume next month, with six legs scheduled in June.
