The Indian women’s cricket team qualified for the LA 2028 Olympics after finishing as the best-placed Asian side at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 currently underway in England.
India’s quota was confirmed on Monday after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the qualification system for cricket at the LA 2028 Olympics.
Under the first qualification pathway, the best-placed eligible team from each of the four mentioned continents – Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania – at the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup earned a quota place for the LA 2028 Olympics.
Although India failed to make the semi-finals after losing to Australia at Lord’s on Sunday and finishing third in Group 1, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side emerged as the best finisher among all Asian sides in the tournament.
Sri Lanka also finished third in Group 2 with six points – the same as India – but the Women in Blue had a better net run rate (NRR) than the Lankans, placing them higher in the standings.
Bangladesh and Pakistan, the other two teams from Asia at the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, finished with four and two points, respectively.
India joined Australia, Great Britain (through England) and South Africa as the first four women’s teams to qualify for cricket at the LA 2028 Olympics.
Cricket will return to the Olympics at LA 2028 after an absence of 128 years.
The sport last featured at Paris 1900 and will make its comeback with separate men’s and women’s T20 tournaments featuring six teams each. Matches will be played at a purpose-built venue in Pomona from July 12 to 29, 2028.
The Indian men’s cricket team will have a separate qualification pathway.
Currently world No. 1, the Indian men’s team will need to finish as Asia’s best-ranked side in the ICC Men’s T20 Team Rankings on December 31, 2026, to earn a direct quota.
If they fail to secure a berth through rankings, the Indian men’s cricket team can have another shot at a quota through the eight-team Final Olympic Global Qualification Tournament (FOGQT) in 2027.
