Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu will spearhead the Indian weightlifting team at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow after being named in the national squad for the multi-sport event on Friday
Mirabai Chanu, a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, will compete in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category in Glasgow.
The 31-year-old Indian weightlifter has won three Commonwealth Games medals in her career – gold at Gold Coast 2018 (48kg) and Birmingham 2022 (49kg) and silver at Glasgow 2014 (48kg).
A former world champion and silver medallist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Mirabai Chanu last competed at the national championships in Modinagar in February, where she won the title in the 48kg division.
She missed the Asian Weightlifting Championships in May to recover from the shoulder injury she sustained earlier this year.
Mirabai will be joined by fellow Commonwealth Games 2022 medallists Bindyarani Devi and Harjinder Kaur, who will compete in the women’s 58kg and 69kg divisions, respectively. Both won silver medals in Birmingham four years ago.
Among the men, Lovepreet Singh, bronze medallist at the previous edition, will lead the Indian challenge in the +110kg category. Rishikanta Singh (60kg), Ajaya Babu (79kg) and Dilbag Singh (94kg) are set to make their Commonwealth Games debuts.
The weightlifting competitions at the Commonwealth Games 2026 will be held from July 26 to 30 at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow.
India has enjoyed sustained success in Commonwealth Games weightlifting in recent editions, topping the medal standings in both Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
Indian lifters claimed nine medals, including five golds, in Australia before following it up with 10 medals, including three golds, in Birmingham.
