Organized jointly by the Iran’s National Committee of Museums (ICOM Iran) and the Iranian National Museum Association, the event brought together senior officials from the cultural heritage sector, museum professionals, researchers, and civil society representatives to mark this year’s theme reaffirmed globally as “ Museums Uniting a Divided World”. The ceremony coincided with the 80th anniversary of ICOM’s founding.
Representing the UNESCO Tehran Office, Representing the UNESCO Tehran Office, Mr. Farrukh Toirov opened his address by stating: “Museums matter beyond their walls. They are central to how societies preserve meaning, transmit memory, and foster understanding across generations. They are not only places where heritage is preserved and exhibited, but also living spaces of encounter and exchange. Within them, knowledge is shared, perspectives are brought into dialogue, and different histories can be understood alongside one another. In this way, museums help foster mutual understanding and contribute to the foundations of peace and social cohesion.”
He then conveyed the message from the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Khaled El-Enany, for the International Museum Day, which highlighted UNESCO’s work in supporting museum rehabilitation, safeguarding collections, promoting the return and restitution of cultural objects, and combating illicit trafficking of cultural property, in line with the Organization’s 2015 Recommendation on Museums and Collections.
The event was marked by reflection on current challenges facing the cultural heritage sector. Mr. Ali Darabi, Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, referred to the impact of recent events on historical sites, museums, and World Heritage properties across the country. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening cultural heritage governance and reaffirmed Iran’s longstanding contribution to the global heritage landscape.
Mr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, reflected on the theme of the year, highlighting connection in a complex world and describing museums as spaces for dialogue and shared understanding. Mr. Ahmad Mohit Tabatabaei, Honorary President of ICOM Iran, emphasized support for smaller and private museums, many of which operate with limited resources while preserving valuable collections. Mr. Seyyed Mohammad Beheshti, former head of the Cultural Heritage Organization, reflected on “connection” in Iranian cultural traditions, linking it to coexistence and peacebuilding. An international perspective was also provided through a video message from Mr. Antonio Rodríguez, President of ICOM International, and remarks by Ms. Golnaz Golsabahi, Vice-President of ICOM International.
The event concluded with a ceremony recognizing several individuals, including museum directors and prominent cultural and heritage figures, in appreciation of their significant efforts during challenging periods, and their dedication to safeguarding and ensuring the continuity of cultural and historical heritage in the current circumstances.
The commemoration reaffirmed the role of museums as spaces for dialogue, learning, and cultural exchange.
