She’s back!
Serena Williams will make her competitive return to tennis after almost four years in the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club in London, England, later this month.
The 44-year-old, who has 23 major singles titles to her name, last played competitively in September 2022, in a third-round singles match at the U.S. Open.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said in a statement released by the organisers of the WTA 500 tournament on Monday (1 June).
“Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
Indeed, Williams won seven singles and six doubles Grand Slam titles – with her sister Venus Williams – at Wimbledon, the grass-court major.
The only player to complete a ‘career Golden Slam’ in both singles and doubles, Williams had hinted at a comeback, and Monday’s announcement confirmed the news of her much-anticipated return.
Her participation at the 8-14 June Queens Club tournament, the prestigious grass-court warm-up for Wimbledon, also leaves the door open for her involvement in the major should she be handed a wildcard.
Although her doubles partner is yet to be confirmed, British media reported Williams is expected to play alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko.
