India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finished runners-up at the Thailand Open 2026 after losing to Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin in the men’s doubles badminton final in Bangkok on Sunday.
The top-seeded Indian badminton players, competing in their first final of the 2026 BWF World Tour season, went down against the unseeded Indonesian pair 21-12, 25-23 in 53 minutes.
This was Satwik and Chirag’s first loss against Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin in five head-to-head meetings.
Satwik-Chirag last won a BWF title two years ago. Their last win, incidentally, was at the 2024 Thailand Open. The Indian duo also won the tournament in 2019.
The Indian badminton players also made it to the finals at the China Masters and Hong Kong Open last year but were unable to clinch the title.
In the opening game of the BWF Super 500 tournament final, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy fell behind early at 4-1 and were unable to claw their way back.
The second game was a closely fought contest. After trailing 5-2 early on, Satwik and Chirag battled back to draw level and saved four match points. However, they were beaten after the Indonesian duo capitalised on their fifth match point.
In the semi-finals, Satwik and Chirag came from behind to beat the third-seeded Malaysians 19-21, 22-20, 21-16 before a 21-12, 21-13 victory over Japan’s Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami in the quarter-finals.
India’s challenge in the singles events ended in quarter-finals with defeats for Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu.
Indian badminton players will next be seen in action at the Malaysia Masters BWF Super 500 tournament next week.
