As part of the Primavera Oaxaqueña (Oaxacan Spring) initiative, the State Government, through SEDECO, is joining forces with UNESCO and the Banorte Foundation to strengthen the biocultural heritage and the social and economic development opportunities of artisans connected to the Tixinda, the Wide-mouth Purpura Shell (Plicopurpura columellaris).
This first phase will involve dyers, weavers, and artisans of the Tu’un Savi (Mixtec) people of Pinotepa de Don Luis, recently designated a Pueblo Púrpura (Purple Town), where this tradition is part of the community’s identity and heritage.
The work will begin on September 12 at the Casa del Pueblo (People House) with a participatory assessment to identify needs, capacities, and opportunities. The project aims to strengthen the management of living heritage, financial skills, and community-based business models to expand economic opportunities and contribute to people’s well-being.
It will also address social, community, and family development from an intercultural perspective.
The project, funded by the Banorte Foundation and building on the transformative results achieved in other states, is now being implemented through the Primavera Oaxaqueña in the state’s coastal region to drive economic development rooted in identity, one that recognizes and strengthens Oaxaca’s ancestral knowledge, artisanal work, and community economies.
