At the biodiversity roundtable under Qatar’s National Dialogue on Climate Change, UNESCO presented the Biosphere Reserve model as the most directly applicable international best practice to accelerate Qatar’s biodiversity adaptation measures under its National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
UNESCO highlighted Al Reem Biosphere Reserve as an existing platform to strengthen Qatar’s adaptation action through ecosystem restoration, scientific support through the UNESCO Earth Network’s 300+ experts across 70 countries, linking Qatar’s National Biodiversity Database to UNESCO platforms, and the Greening Education Partnership’s support for the NAP’s community awareness and education goals.
UNESCO recommended designating Al Reem as a NAP demonstration site; link Qatar’s biodiversity database to UNESCO platforms; and engage youth through UNESCO’s Youth Climate Action Network ‘YouCan’.
