On Tuesday, April 21, the Wiñay Muhu (#GrowingSeed) project was launched, an initiative funded by the Kunming Biodiversity Fund (#KBF) and implemented by UNESCO Peru, under the technical leadership of MINAM and INIA, and in coordination with MIDAGRI, the Regional Government of Cusco, and the municipalities of Lares, Lamay, and Marcapata.
With a multi-level and multi-sector approach, Wiñay Muhu aims to strengthen the in situ conservation of agrobiodiversity, enhance the value of Andean biocultural heritage, and improve food security in high-Andean territories. The initiative will reinforce joint work between national, regional, and local governments and conservationist farming communities, recognizing the central role of women and youth as guardians and key actors of this living heritage.
The project will work in coordination with the tourism and gastronomy sectors, promote value chains, and develop sustainable financing mechanisms for the Agrobiodiversity Zones of Ccollasuyo and Marcapata-Ccollana, turning cultural conservation practices into drivers of economic development for smallholder farmers. Its implementation will directly contribute to targets 1, 25, and 28 of Peru’s National Biodiversity Strategy (ENDB) and to the country’s commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
