COP31 will mark an important step for the Greening Education Partnership. Ahead of its fifth anniversary in 2027, the Partnership will convene countries and partners to advance climate education, accelerate action on greening education systems and spotlight Education for Sustainable Development.
This event will advance discussions on the structure and work of the Partnership’s next phase, GEP 2.0, with a stronger focus on country-level implementation and regional cooperation. Together with the Türkiye Ministry of National Education and OECD, the Partnership’s Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group will also be launched to strengthen data, evidence and accountability, in particular through the GEP Global Tracker, a global observatory on climate change education. The role of education in responding to climate-related crises and emergencies will also be addressed, alongside the longer-term transformation needed to build resilient education systems.
Children, young people and teachers will be at the centre of these discussions. Their meaningful participation is essential to shaping education systems that can respond to climate change and prepare learners to contribute to sustainable futures.
Greening Education Partnership reaches 100 member countries
At COP31, the Greening Education Partnership will reach a key milestone of 100 country members, with the Republic of Türkiye becoming its 100th member country. Launched at the 2022 UN Transforming Education Summit, the Partnership has grown into the largest global alliance for climate education, bringing together 100 countries and more than 2,000 organizations. The Partnership supports countries in greening education across schools, curricula, teacher development and communities, aiming to ensure that every learner is climate-ready.
As we prepare to host COP31, Türkiye is joining the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership as its 100th country member. We see this as an important step, it will allow us to share with the world the work we have pursued with determination for many years and to build on it through new partnerships.
Yusuf TekinMinister of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye
The outcomes and commitments advanced at COP31 will also contribute to the wider Education for Sustainable Development agenda, building momentum towards the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 13 to 15 January 2027.
