A new space in the heart of Chapultepec Forest, among trees and trails, invites children and families to travel to other worlds, discover stories, and find inspiration in books to transform our own world.
We talk about the new library of the SDG Book Club, Mexico Chapter, inaugurated on 17 October by the United Nations at Chapultepec’s iconic Audiorama in Mexico City. It is now open to the public, with a collection of 92 children’s and young adult books available to read freely.
The library brings together stories that invite readers to discover the world’s diversity, celebrate our differences, care for nature, promote equality and build relationships based on peace and respect. Through endearing characters, adventures and illustrations, readers can explore the great challenges of our time, and the possibilities for building a better future.
The space opened to celebrate the United Nations 81st anniversary during an SDG Literary Picnic. The activities brought together more than 300 people around read-alouds, storytelling, film screenings, and creative activities.
The library’s collection was made possible through donations from the Embassy of Finland, the publishers Edelvives and Ate con queso, and the Office of the Resident Coordinator and UN staff in Mexico.
The SDG Book Club Mexico Chapter is led by the United Nations in Mexico (UNIC, UNESCO and UNICEF) together with partners such as IBBY Mexico, the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), the National Library of Mexico, the Mexican Publishers’ Association and the Guadalajara International Book Fair. It aims to bring children closer to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through literature. The Club’s catalogue contains 104 books in Spanish, including 10 in Indigenous languages.
Visit the library, choose a book, share a story, and discover that great transformations can also begin with a small read.
