The Artemis programme seeks not only to return humans to the Moon, but to establish a sustainable presence that will enable future exploration of Mars and beyond. “Sanctuary on the Moon” is a lunar time capsule, composed of 24 synthetic sapphire discs containing a vast archive of human civilization, that seeks to safeguard and transmit humanity’s collective knowledge, heritage, and creativity beyond Earth.
Both the UNESCO and the Artemis programme share a commitment to preserving and transmitting humanity’s knowledge, culture, and heritage for future generations. Through advancing our understanding of the Moon’s environment and testing technologies for long-term exploration, the initiative contributes both to space exploration and to the safeguarding of cultural and scientific heritage.
These objectives closely reflect the principles at the heart of UNESCO: the pursuit of knowledge for the benefit of humanity, the promotion of peaceful international cooperation, and the preservation and dissemination of knowledge. In this context, the inclusion of the “Sanctuary on the Moon” initiative, developed in France with the support of the Centre National d’Études Spatiales and Inria, represents a particularly meaningful alignment with the Organization’s mandate.
