UNESCO Peru launches Horizontes Amazonía to strengthen intercultural and environmental education in four regions

After a participatory design process involving more than 400 people and 66 organizations, the Horizontes Amazonía program was launched in the Ucayali, Madre de Dios, Loreto, and Amazonas regions.

The program began with the in-person phase of the specialization in intercultural and environmental pedagogy for Amazonian secondary education, held during the school management weeks from March 2 to 13.

The specialization is led by the Amazonian Bilingual Teacher Training Program (Formabiap) and the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae – Nopoki, and follows a blended format of 340 certified hours, including in-school support.

The program also addresses topics such as adolescence and Amazonian secondary education, project-based learning, socio-emotional protection and well-being, school management and student participation, and education for sustainable development and climate change, integrating Indigenous knowledge.

Ucayali 

Teachers and school leaders from San Francisco-B and Agropecuario El Pimental schools in the province of Coronel Portillo, as well as Agropecuario Monte Alegre and Waldemar Soria in the province of Padre Abad, participated in the program.

The sessions were led by the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae – Nopoki, a partner of the Horizontes Amazonía program.

The launch event was attended by the Director of DRE Ucayali, Nora Delgado; the Director of Pedagogical Management of DRE Ucayali, Ángela Villacorta; the Director of UGEL Coronel Portillo, Liliana Armas Sánchez; and the Director of UGEL Padre Abad, Rafael López Napán.

Madre de Dios

The workshops were held in Villa Salvación, the capital of Manu in Madre de Dios, where teachers and school leaders from Virgen Madre de Dios, Boca Manu, Juan José Larrañaga, Diamante, and José Carlos Mariátegui schools in the province of Manu strengthened intercultural learning connected to the territory. The sessions were led by the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae – Nopoki campus.

Local authorities also participated, including the Director of UGEL Manu, Roberto Ticona Cueca; the Head of Pedagogical Management at UGEL Manu, Adelaida Granados Yabar; and the provincial subprefect of Manu, Juan Berríos Castro. The Frankfurt Zoological Society, a territorial partner of the program, was also present.

Additionally, a launch event was held, led by the territorial partner Frankfurt Zoological Society, with the participation of organizations such as Manu National Park, the Emergency Woman Center, the Manu Health Network, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, CREES Foundation, the South-East Peruvian School Network (RESSOP), and the Directorate for Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (DACI) of the Ministry of Culture.

Loreto

Teachers and school leaders from Miguel Acosta Oyarce, Pastor Valencia Peña, and Boras de Pucaurquillo schools in the province of Mariscal Nieto, as well as La Paz del Marañón and Nuestra Señora de Amazonas schools in the province of Loreto, were supported.

The sessions were led by the Amazonian Bilingual Teacher Training Program (Formabiap), the training partner of the Horizontes Amazonía program.

Local partner institutions also participated, including Amazon Forever; the Director of Institutional Management of UGEL Ramón Castilla, Eder Andoa Tangoa; the EIB specialist of UGEL Loreto-Nauta, Carlos Lancha Manuyama; and Porticus Peru representative Isabela Martínez Milanezzi.

Amazonas

A coordinated effort was established with UGEL Condorcanqui and the Amazonian Bilingual Teacher Training Program (Formabiap), the program’s training partner.

Teachers and school leaders from the bilingual schools Juan Velasco Alvarado in Santa María de Nieva and Ricardo Palma Soriano in the Kigkis community strengthened educational management tools with an intercultural approach.
