Olympian Shivpal Singh was handed a 10-year suspension on Thursday for a second doping offence.
The 31-year-old javelin thrower, who represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, was sanctioned by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) Disciplinary Panel after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid methandienone.
Shivpal Singh’s latest suspension comes after his first doping offence in 2021, when his sample tested positive for a steroid during an out-of-competition test.
The NADA Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel subsequently handed him a four-year ban in August 2022, backdated to 2021.
However, Shivpal Singh successfully argued before NADA’s Appeal Panel that his positive test had resulted from contaminated supplements.
In January 2023, the panel accepted his argument and reduced the suspension from four years to one.
Shivpal Singh then returned to competition in April 2023 and won bronze at the National Inter-State Championships at Bhubaneswar in June before claiming gold at the National Games in Goa.
His latest sanction could effectively bring the curtain down on his career, with the 10-year ban taking him well beyond his competitive years.
The highlight of Shivpal Singh’s career came at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, where he won the silver medal with a personal-best throw of 86.23m.
The Indian athlete‘s last competitive appearance came at the Indian Open Throws Competition in March 2025, where he finished runner-up.
