A sold-out Aachen Arena erupted into applause as Germany’s final rider, Richard Vogel, delivered a clear round, celebrating the equestrian team jumping world title for the host nation on Friday (21 August) at the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026.

Germany had entered the final at the top of the standings following the team qualifiers, ahead of the United States and Belgium, with only the narrowest of margins separating the leading teams. With coveted Olympic quota places also at stake, there was little room for error in these rainy finals.

The German hosts held their nerve when it mattered most, keeping their spot at the top of the standings to claim gold, as Belgium took silver and Great Britain completed the podium with bronze.

Some penalties cost the United States a podium result, finishing fourth, followed by Italy, Switzerland, Ireland and France.

It was the third medal of these home championships for Germany, following team gold in dressage and silver in team eventing.

With the United States, the Olympic host, already guaranteed a team place at the LA28 Olympic Games, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland and France secured the seven available Olympic team quota* places through the FEI World Championships.

Earlier in the championships, the first team quota places for LA28 had also been awarded in dressage and eventing (see below).

*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective teams at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the LA Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at LA28.

Aachen: a place of dreams

For all four members of Germany’s title-winning team, Sophie HinnersDaniel DeusserMarcus Ehning and Richard Vogel, winning a world title on home soil, in front of an equestrian-loving Aachen crowd, was a dream come true.

Deusser tried to put the feeling into words: “I had goosebumps in the arena. Riding in here as a German, it’s an incredible spectacle. It’s indescribable.”

There is a reason, after all, why Aachen has been dubbed the “Wimbledon of equestrian sport”.

But Germany’s was not the only dream realised on Friday. For several teams outside the medals, securing a quota place for the LA28 Olympic Games represented an achievement years in the making.

Italy’s Piergiorgio Bucci was overcome with pride after helping his nation secure its long-awaited return to the Olympic team jumping competition.

“I feel really thankful to my horse and very happy for my nation because it’s been 22 years since we qualified for the Olympics,” Bucci told Olympics.com. “It was our biggest goal.”

The quota spot also carried special significance for the 51-year-old, who said it was “about time for me to have the Olympics as a real goal“.

“Now I know that the team will be going, and I will do my best to have one of my horses really ready for that. I cannot wait to fight for it,” he added.

Like Italy, Ireland’s Olympic bronze medallist Cian O’Connor also said that securing the Olympic team quota had been the primary objective in Aachen: “The main goal that the team had all along was Olympic qualification,” O’Connor said.

“For a country like Ireland, which is so rich in riders and has so much talent, hopefully that will give people at home good motivation.

“New owners might get involved in the sport and back some of these top Irish riders that we have, with investment to try to peak and medal at the Olympic Games with the right horsepower underneath us.

“The Olympics are very close to my heart,” he added. “Being a medallist, the only Irish Olympic [jumping] medallist from the bronze in London [2012], LA[28] will probably be my last one. So it was very important that we qualified, and now we can make a plan to get there and go well.”
