Mozambique won their first ever game at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-2 over Gabon on Sunday (28 December), a result that gives them a huge boost as they look to qualify for the next stage at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.Â
In an action packed game in Agadir, Mozambique led 2-0 to just before the break, when Gabon got one goal back on the stroke of half-time.
Mozambique went on to extend their lead 7 minutes after the restart, and although their opponents were able to pull one goal back, they held on for a win to ensure their seventeenth game at AFCON did not end in a familiar scoreline – a draw or a loss.
In the other early game on 28 December, a spirited Sudan side beat Equatorial Guinea in one of the competition’s most surprising results. An own goal from Saul Coco sealed the fate of the Nzalang Nacional.
