The Indian women’s tennis team will start its Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign in New Delhi on Tuesday, aiming to bag a coveted playoff spot despite late injury setbacks.
The BJK Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I matches, to be played on the hard courts of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) Stadium, will be available to watch on live streaming in India.
The Asia-Oceania Group I for the Billie Jean King Cup 2026 features six teams – hosts India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand and Thailand.
India, ranked 28th in the world, open their campaign against world No. 32 Thailand on Tuesday. New Zealand (31), South Korea (35), Indonesia (41) and Mongolia (45) complete the line-up.
However, India’s preparations have been hit by injuries.
Promising youngster Shrivalli Bhamidipaty has withdrawn due to a back spasm, while Vaidehee Chaudhari was ruled out after twisting her ankle in training. Zeel Desai has been named as a replacement.
BJK Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I: Indian tennis team
- Indian Billie Jean King Cup team: Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Zeel Desai, Ankita Raina, Rutuja Bhosale
- Non-playing captain: Vishal Uppal
In singles, India will rely on an in-form Sahaja Yamalapalli and 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar, who climbed to India No. 1 in the rankings on Monday. The squad also includes Asian Games medallists Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale.
According to the tournament format, all teams in Group I will play each other once.
Each tie will be a best-of-three affair consisting of two singles and one doubles match.
Once all the ties are done, the top two teams will secure promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs scheduled later this year. The bottom two will be relegated to the Asia/Oceania Group II.
Indonesia, led by Janice Tjen, the highest-ranked singles player in the field at world No. 41, boast one of the toughest teams in the tournament. New Zealand have world No. 11 doubles player Erin Routliffe in their ranks.
Last year, India hosted the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I stage for the first time at Pune’s Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex.
The Indian tennis team finished the group as runner-ups behind New Zealand to qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs. However, India’s run ended in the playoffs after losses to the Netherlands and Slovenia.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is one of the most prestigious international tennis events for women. It brings together top-ranked players from different countries to compete in a team format. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.
