India made an impressive start to their Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign on Thursday with two victories in bowls.
The headline result came from Commonwealth Games debutant Putul Sonowal, who produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening day by defeating reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the men’s singles Section D. You can read the full report here.
The result puts Sonowal in a strong position in Section D, with only the group winner progressing to the semi-finals. He returns to the green later today to face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands, aiming to build on his dream start.
India also celebrated a winning start in the women’s pairs, where Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey opened their campaign with a win.
Lovlina Borgohain, meanwhile, assured India’s first medal after she received a bye in the quarter-finals in the boxing draw. The Indian boxer will start her campaign from the semi-finals.
Boxing at the Commonwealth Games awards two bronze medals in each weight category – one to each losing semi-finalist. A boxer who reaches the last four therefore is guaranteed a podium finish even if they lose.
Lovlina’s bye was a result of the size of the draw.
