Harjinder Kaur claimed the silver medal in the women’s 69kg event to continue India’s impressive weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Competing at the SEC Armadillo, the 29-year-old Indian weightlifter finished with a combined lift of 227kg (101kg snatch + 126kg clean and jerk) to secure her second successive Commonwealth Games medal.
Harjinder had won bronze in the women’s 71kg category at Birmingham 2022 with a total lift of 212kg (93kg snatch + 119kg clean and jerk).
Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won the gold medal with a CWG record total of 240kg (108kg+132kg), while Australia’s Nya Phebe Hayman claimed bronze with 218kg (97kg+121kg).
Harjinder enjoyed an excellent snatch competition, successfully clearing 95kg, 99kg and 101kg. Her final lift briefly stood as the Commonwealth Games record before Simoneau surpassed it with successful lifts of 104kg and 108kg.
The Indian continued her fine form in the clean and jerk, clearing 120kg, 123kg and 126kg to move into the lead.
Her final lift also briefly stood as a Commonwealth Games record before Simoneau responded with 127kg on her opening clean and jerk attempt and eventually extended the mark en route to the gold medal.
Earlier in the day, Nirupama Devi Seram became the first Indian weightlifter to miss out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after failing to register a lift in the clean and jerk in the women’s 63kg event.
Nirupama was placed fifth after the snatch with a best effort of 93kg. She failed her opening attempt before successfully clearing the weight on her second lift, while her bid to improve to 95kg with the final attempt was unsuccessful.
Her campaign unravelled in the clean and jerk, where she failed to clear 123kg in all three attempts, resulting in a did not finish (DNF) and leaving her without a total.
The result ended India’s run of medals in weightlifting at Glasgow 2026, with the country having reached the podium in each of its first six events.
India have now won seven weightlifting medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai Chanu struck gold, while Harjinder Kaur, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Rishikanta Singh, Raja Muthupandi and Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver medals. Bindyarani Devi has a bronze.
