Two-time men’s champion Birhanu Legese of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Irine Cheptai, the 2022 women’s event winner, will headline a star-studded start line at the Delhi Half Marathon 2026 in the national capital on Sunday.
Live streaming of the Delhi Half Marathon 2026 will be available to watch in India.
The 21st edition of the Delhi Half Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race, will feature 36 international elite athletes – 18 men and 18 women – alongside a 42-member Indian elite field comprising 22 men and 20 women.
The 21.097km-long half marathon event will start and finish at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi with more than 41,000 runners expected to participate across the various race categories.
Legese, whose half marathon personal best is 58:59, is the fastest man in the international elite field and will return to Delhi looking for a third title.
The Ethiopian will line up in a competitive men’s field featuring seven other runners who have broken the 60-minute barrier.
Legese’s personal best is six seconds slower than the men’s course record of 58:53, set by fellow Ethiopian Amedework Walelegn in 2020.
Kenya’s Charles Matata, runner-up in Delhi in 2023, will be among Legese’s leading challengers.
Ethiopia’s Deriba Tesfaye and Melaku Belachew, winner of the Hong Kong Marathon 2026, will add further depth to the men’s field.
In the women’s elite race, Cheptai returns to the Indian capital four years after winning the title in 2022.
The Kenyan boasts a half marathon personal best of 1:04:53 and heads to Delhi after winning the Burj2Burj Half Marathon in Dubai in February before finishing sixth at the Boston Marathon.
Cheptai’s personal best is just seven seconds outside the women’s course record of 1:04:46, set by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in 2020.
Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, a World Championships medallist, will also be among the major contenders.
The Kenyan-born Israeli athlete has a marathon personal best of 2:17:45 and a half marathon best of 1:06:09. She is also a former European 10000m champion.
