Four-time Olympic silver medallist Kagiyama Yuma is sitting out the 2026-27 figure skating season for a period of self-reflection.

The Japanese skater dropped the unexpected announcement via Instagram on Monday (13 April), less than a month after finishing runner-up to Ilia Malinin with a personal best free skate at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague.

The 22-year-old did not detail what he would be doing during his break, other than to say he already has a few things lined up.

“For the 2026–27 season, I’ve decided to take a break from competing,” Kagiyama said.

“I want to use this time to rediscover what makes figure skating so special, take on new challenges, and reflect on myself as I look toward the future.

“I’ve got a few projects in the works, so I hope you’ll look forward to them!

“There will also be ice shows and events, so I’m excited to see you all again and skate in front of you soon.”

At Milano Cortina 2026, Kagiyama won silver in both the individual and team event for the second consecutive Games.

Japan’s skating landscape looks to be drastically next season, with four-time women’s world champion Sakamoto Kaori having retired.
