Two-time Asian champion Joshna Chinappa was knocked out of the Indian Open 2026 squash tournament after losing her quarter-final match at the CCI Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.
Joshna Chinappa, seeded fifth and last year’s runner-up, bowed out of the squash tournament following a 3-1 (11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-1) defeat to Egypt’s third seed Nadien El Hammamy.
Anahat Singh, the reigning women’s champion and top seed, and unseeded Tanvi Khanna won their quarter-final matches and will face each other for a place in the final of the PSA Copper event.
The 17-year-old Anahat Singh kept her title defence on track with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-4) victory over Malaysia’s Sehveetrraa Kumar.
The top-seeded Indian squash player raced through the opening game with ease, taking it 11-2 without breaking much sweat.
Sehveetrraa Kumar offered a stronger challenge in the second game but Anahat’s clever deception helped her maintain control. The third game followed a similar pattern, with Anahat dictating the pace to seal a comfortable passage into the last four.
Meanwhile, Tanvi produced an upset to beat fourth-seeded Malaysian Ainaa Amani 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8).
In another quarter-final clash, second seed Hana Moataz of Egypt fought hard to edge past eighth seed Yasshmita Jadishkumar of Malaysia 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8).
In the men’s tournament, also a PSA Copper-level event, India enjoyed an impressive run in the quarter-finals as Asian Games medallist Abhay Singh, seeded second, and fourth seed Veer Chotrani stormed into the semi-finals.
Abhay Singh will take on Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran while Chotrani is set to face another Malaysian challenger, Sanjay Jeeva, for a place in the final.
Jeeva secured his semi-final berth with a commanding 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8) victory over Egypt’s Ibrahim El Kabbani in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Chandaran advanced after defeating compatriot Duncan Lee in an all-Malaysian contest.
Abhay Singh beat Egypt’s Yassin Shohdy 3-1 (11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7) after Chotrani produced a composed performance to defeat Egypt’s Mohamed Sharaf 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-2).
Squash is set to make its Olympic debut at LA 2028.
