UNESCO is pleased to announce the public launch of the UNESCO Open Science Platform during the UN Open Source Week 2026, from 22 to 26 June 2026 in New York. Developed in partnership with the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC), the platform is released as free and open-source software and is built on open technologies, including a customized implementation of CERN’s InvenioRDM, an open source framework for building large-scale digital academic repositories and platforms, as a core component. With an initial focus on research produced or supported by UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Family, the platform aims to promote UNESCO-related knowledge and support the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.
Tracking global progress on open science
This platform responds to Member States’ need for practical tools to implement the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science. It features interactive dashboards that visualize progress across a range of open science dimensions in UNESCO Member States, including policies, infrastructure, capacity building and incentives. They are based on quantitative and qualitative data collected through UNESCO’s first consultation on the implementation of the Recommendation on Open Science. The dashboards include cross-country visualizations, country profiles and a semantic cloud of key challenges in the implementation of open science, helping users explore global, regional and national developments and identify areas for further action.
By bringing UNESCO-related scientific publications and other research outputs together with data on global open science progress, including the finding that around 75% of responding Member States have open science infrastructure at the national or institutional level, the platform helps make knowledge more discoverable, accessible and useful for evidence-based-decision-making.

A platform dedicated to promoting open access to UNESCO research products
This platform brings together a growing collection of research outputs from UNESCO science programmes, awards and fellowship initiatives, making them easier to discover, access and explore through a single search interface. The current collection focuses primarily on publications, such as journal articles, books and reports, with additional products, such as research data, to be integrated over time. Users can access detailed metadata, identify the open access status of resources and explore impact indicators, including scholarly and patent citations.
Translating scientific knowledge into accessible insights
To bridge the gap between research, policy and society, the platform features curated highlights and illustrated plain language summaries that translate complex findings on issues such as climate change, water resource management and gender gap in science, into clear, actionable insights, useful for decision-makers and non-specialist audiences. These features will be updated regularly to reflect the latest research evidence.
