The celebration was particularly significant as JAWS marked its 50th anniversary, recognizing five decades of commitment to ethical journalism, freedom of expression, and media development in Samoa and across the Pacific.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt emphasized the central role of media in society, stating that “media is part of democracy… and you have a role to play,” and acknowledging the contribution of journalists to informing public debate and governance.
UNESCO Regional Director for the Pacific, Sardar Umar Alam, emphasized in his keynote that “press freedom is essential for peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies, and that in an era of rapid disinformation driven by social media and AI, journalism remains a vital line of defence against misinformation and social fragmentation”.
The Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Will Robinson, also underscored the importance of journalism, noting that “a free press is an essential public service,” highlighting its role in reflecting diverse voices, verifying facts, and building trust within communities.
JAWS President Lagi Keresoma highlighted the enduring role of the media, noting that journalism continues to serve as a strong and independent voice in promoting accountability and the public’s right to information
The event was attended by a large number of JAWS members and journalists, reflecting strong engagement from the national media community. Activities throughout the week included training sessions, panel discussions, and public awareness initiatives aimed at strengthening professional standards and supporting the next generation of journalists in Samoa.
Held under the global theme “Shaping a Future for Peace, Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, Justice and Security,” the commemoration served as a timely reminder of the shared responsibility of governments, partners, and media stakeholders to safeguard press freedom and strengthen access to reliable information.
UNESCO continues to support Member States in the Pacific in advancing media development, enhancing the safety of journalists, and promoting access to information as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
